The winter-season sports are in full swing at Cornell University and this past weekend was filled with some very exciting ice hockey action! Here’s a few of my favorites from four games: women vs Princeton and Quinnipiac and a double-header of men’s games vs Arizona State. #YellCornell
The Cornell Big Red won by 6-1, so there’s plenty of celebration photos in this bunch - this is just the first of many.
The first game of the series was after the holiday break and the team played great defense, in addition to netting six goals in the first game and another three in the second game.
Group celebration time!
The lighting in Lynah is not ideal, but this shot of The Captain seemed to be a nice perfect balance.
Sometimes you miss focus and the frame never sees the light of day. This was one of those happy accidents where the net and puck are nice and sharp for the final goal of the night and you get to see the “artistic” shot in the blog.
Did I mention the defense played well?
Total team celebration photo.
“Dragon” after his goal against Arizona State University.
I love that the student section is across the ice from me when I shoot at ice level at Lynah Rink. It definitely makes for some nice frames.
Game 2 : I like the peek-around from MattG in the crease.
It was a very spirited game with lots of quality contact.
I couldn’t have posed them any better…
Max sacrificed himself a couple times and his facial expression in this one wins the day.
Trying to hold on to the one-point win. Spoiler alert- we did.
Weird spot for a sit-down meeting, but who am I to judge?
The one-on-one is always a nice frame, as infrequent as they happen.
It was a great pair of wins over Arizona State for the Cornell Big Red men’s ice hockey team. #YellCornell
I love the quiet, soft features like this. There’s something awesome about game action, but photos like this, I think, tell a story.
The women’s team split with a loss to Princeton and a bounce-back win against Quinnipiac.
It makes it harder to reach the puck if someone is holding you back with their stick, lol.
A solid piece of defense sends the puck off-target.
I love the birdcage helmets of college hockey, because you get to see more faces.
The puck is in there somewhere…
Stick-and-glove save!
Another self-sacrifice on the defensive side of the ice.
More defense from a team captain.
She totally saved this one!
Saturday’s game against Quinnipiac went a little better, with the Big Red coming out on top, 2-1.
The “I just scored” face.
Check out that stick bend!
Sometimes it’s just easier to block a puck with your whole body.
Quinnipiac scored on this shot - through that tiny little gap on the left. It was a heck of an effort to knock it down, but thankfully only this one got through.
A great bounce-back win for the women’s team!
