It was an exciting time for Cornell Sports in Ithaca this past weekend, as we hosted a plethora of home events including an indoor track & field meet, women’s ice hockey games vs Brown and Yale, a women’s tennis match (and HUGE win) against Colorado and a pair of men’s basketball games vs Brown and Yale.
I had the distinct pleasure of running from event-to-event and photographing the Cornell student-athletes. I feel like I walked away having made some really nice pictures - I hope you enjoy! #YellCornell
The dark ceiling of Barton Hall makes a great contrast against our bright red and white uniforms, especially in the pole vault.
Barton Hall has plenty of room to get the good angles, like this low-level shot of the staggared race start.
There are several windows that allow little shafts of light down on the back straightaway and can make for some great contrast.
The high perch was great for hurdles with a nice clean background.
It’s going to be a photo finish for Cornell!
Another low-angle race start, this time for the 60m race.
Jump high!
The pole vault offers so many different options for photos - the start, the peak and the excitement after clearing the bar.
They let me in the cage for some of the throws, so I went with the long glass instead of the wide-angle lens.
Up and over!
Head coach Artie Smith offers a fist-bump to a student-athlete after a solid showing in the hurdles.
It was a fast day on the track in Barton Hall.
I have really enjoyed shooting ice hockey this year - it offers a challenge for peak action and freezing the puck (pun intended, sorry).
A great save, but unfortunate for the home team.
The puck never fully crossed the line for a goal, but it was a worthy effort from both teams.
Up in the air!
Even after falling to her knees, she was able to take a good hack at the puck.
That stick bend…
I also love capturing the lighter side of the game, when the moments arise.
Talk about sacrificing your body for the team! AND! Our goalie made the save!
Another great save!
Post-goal celebrations are always a winner!
I had the fortune of spending a couple hours filming and photographing our women’s tennis team on Sunday. They battled hard against Colorado and came up with an awesome 4-3 win! #YellCornell
I love the facial expressions of all our student-athletes when competing, but this is one of my favorites!
Jubilation after winning a point in a tough #1 doubles match.
Backhand FTW.
Another great backhand.
I shot for roughly two hours and I’m pretty sure this is the only ball-on-racket photo of the day.
The #1 doubles match was some great tennis to watch and photograph!
The team before the big win.
The first-place team from Yale came into town on Saturday and unfortunately keep their place in line after the road win.
Brown was in town on Friday and the good guys won, 70-66 in OT.
I’ve been looking for different angles in Newman Arena and I really like the angled, medium-high shot from the corner of the stands. It’s a great angle at the hoop and often showcases the student section behind.
Love the lines the athlete’s limbs made in this frame.
Another shot from the stands down to the hoop.
I really like this quiet shot of head coach Brian Earl, complete with our primary logo, a row of cheerleaders and the bench, all watching in anticipation.
There were a couple great crowds for this weekend’s events, including this group at Saturday night’s basketball game vs Yale. #YellCornell
